New Major Shareholder Puts Pressure on Baloise

Baloise's Investor Day is set for September 12, and a major topic of discussion is expected to be Cevian Capital's involvement. On Monday, the Swedish investor announced via the «Financial Times» that it had raised its stake in the Swiss financial group to 9,4 percent, surpassing UBS and BlackRock as the largest shareholder.

Cevian partner Robert Schuchna told the British financial publication that Baloise «has the opportunity to become a leading Swiss insurer. We believe the company has significant value potential.» Baloise responded by stating it does not comment on individual shareholders but is, however, looking forward to Investor Day on September 12.

Last Chance for Baloise Management

According to the «Financial Times», Cevian wants Baloise’s management to focus on the countries where the company is strongest and holds a high market share, while also increasing the payout ratio to shareholders.

Cevian sees this week’s Investor Day as a last chance for Baloise’s management to revise its strategy. Otherwise, governance improvements will be essential, including bringing more insurance expertise onto the board.

In recent years, Baloise has faced challenges compared to its competitors. While Swiss Life, Zurich, and Axa have seen their stock prices rise, Baloise has struggled to keep pace.
