Petiole Advocates for the Benefits of Private Markets

«We are proud to be here in Switzerland.» These words were repeated several times during the event at the Park Hyatt in Zurich. Abdulmohsin AlOmran, founder and board member of Petiole Asset Management AG, expressed them just as David M. Darst did, who is the Senior Advisor to the Investment Team at Petiole Asset Management AG. This is not only due to the role of the local financial hub but also for family reasons in Darst's case: the former Morgan Stanley manager has ancestors from the Canton of Glarus. In reference to the Rütli Oath, which lies at the origin of the Swiss Confederation and thus modern Switzerland, he vowed: «We swear that we will do whatever is necessary.»

This is appropriate, as highlighted by Stéphane Garelli, founder of IMD World Competitiveness Center, and Christoph Holz, expert in digitalization, in their speeches. The former showed humorously and impressively how market circumstances have changed over the past years. Today, the state increasingly has the task of acting as a rescuer in crises.

AI as the Crucial Driver

At the same time, Garelli lamented that the willingness to take risks is declining. «Why don't we take a risk? Why not?» he asked the audience.  Holz, the computer scientist, explained how significantly artificial intelligence (AI) influences technical development to an unimaginable extent. «Many changes are coming in the next few years, and it is wise for us to engage with them,» he emphasized. AI could lead to increased efficiency and thus more prosperity.

However, there are limits: «Responsibility cannot be digitized,» he stressed. And the fear that AI will destroy numerous jobs is unfounded in his eyes. «The demographic change is too strong,» he said.

Proper Advice Pays Off

According to Holz, the financial sector offers unprecedented opportunities through AI: AI can analyze an incredible amount of data in a very short time. However, the expectation that AI will independently manage funds is not foreseeable yet. Financial specialists are still needed.

As Naji Nehme, CEO and CIO at Petiole Asset Management AG, emphasized in a conversation with Klaus W. Wellershoff, former chief economist at UBS, asset managers will continue to distinguish themselves in the future. «There will always be uncertainties. Our task as financial specialists is not to be driven by emotions but to focus on our clients' goals,» he said. Klaus W. Wellershoff agreed: «A  lot of money can be left on the table if one is not properly advised.»

Private Market Develops Very Positively

According to Pierre Andre Genillard, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Petiole Asset Management AG, there is much to gain in the private market, which is developing significantly better than the public sector. The asset management boutique is active not only in private equity but also in real estate, private loans, and venture capital.

«Who else should do it, if not us?»

«The investors face the challenge of maintaining their capital allocation while simultaneously aligning with market opportunities. These are significant challenges that we approach purposefully for our clients in a hyper-fast environment, where unique investment opportunities can arise as quickly as they can disappear. We are agile in detecting market distortions and disciplined in our due diligence,» Nehme emphasized. Or as Abdulmohsin AlOmran succinctly put it: «Who else should do it, if not us?»
