Postfinance: The Subsidiary that Supports the Parent

Postfinance - which, together with UBS, Zürcher Kantonalbank and Raiffeisen, forms the group of systemically important Swiss banks, though it is the only one not permitted to grant loans - reported an operating profit (EBIT) of 224 million Swiss francs for the first nine months of 2025. This represents an increase of 66 million francs compared with the same period last year, according to the interim report published on Tuesday by its parent company, Swiss Post.

Operating income, however, declined from 1,452 million francs to 1,208 million francs. Lower operating income combined with higher operating profit: this is only possible through a reduction in operating expenses, which according to Postfinance resulted from «a targeted focus in the innovative portfolio as well as efficiency measures».

Challenging Environment for Attractive Conditions

Postfinance operated in a difficult market environment with further interest-rate cuts and a more expansionary monetary policy by the Swiss National Bank. This development continues to limit the scope for offering attractive customer interest rates, according to the statement.

Nevertheless, sustained customer trust led to solid developments in the interest business and continued growth in the strategic, interest-independent business areas of investing and payments. Interest-insensitive client assets increased from 20.1 billion francs in the previous year to 22 billion francs.

From the perspective of the parent company, the subsidiary also performed well: «Postfinance makes a significant contribution to the Group's overall result,» states Swiss Post, which is owned by the Swiss Confederation - the underlying reason for Postfinance's statutory prohibition on granting loans.
