Worldline to Expand Network Based on Scion Technology

Worldline — in which the Swiss exchange operator SIX holds a significant (and sometimes contentious) stake — intends to extend SEPN in the coming months. The network, which enables «highly secure, resilient and regulatory-compliant data communication,» was launched at the end of 2024, with the first services rolled out in August 2025. According to Thursday’s press release, major partners such as SBB and Coop have already joined the network.

Zurich’s Scion Technology as the Foundation

The network is based on Scion (Scalability, Control, and Isolation on Next-Generation Networks) — a technology developed at ETH Zurich with support from the Swiss National Bank. The latter also employs Scion in the Secure Swiss Finance Network (SSFN) as part of the Swiss payment system SIC.

Scion enables precise control of data paths and segregation of critical payment information from the public internet, enhancing performance, security, and resilience.

Protection Against Cyber Risks

According to Worldline, SEPN protects companies against cyber risks, ensures stable payment flows, and enhances cyber resilience in international payments. The French firm describes itself as the first provider worldwide and in Switzerland to have implemented a network based on Scion technology.

SEPN was developed in collaboration with the SEPN Association (a non-profit organization), telecommunication providers, and Zurich-based technology company Anapaya Systems.

Beyond its commercial goals, SEPN is designed to strengthen the overall cyber resilience of the payments ecosystem, offering businesses a future-proof digital infrastructure for cashless payments.

Security, Resilience, and Stability in Payments

Lucas Gysin, Business Architect at Worldline and President of the SEPN Association, commented:

«With SEPN, we are setting new benchmarks in security, resilience, and stability for payment transactions. Our partners benefit from uninterrupted, regulatory-compliant transactions and the protection of their data. SEPN is a cornerstone for the future of cashless payments.»

The timing of the announcement also appears strategic: on October 21, ETH Zurich will host «Scion Day,» an event dedicated to the technology’s applications and future potential.
