Switzerland is Shaping the Digital Financial Architecture
At the Point Zero Forum in Zurich, August Benz, Deputy CEO and Head of International & Transformation at the Swiss Bankers Association (SBA), discusses the opportunities and risks of digital transformation — and why international dialogue platforms are indispensable.
Mr. Benz, the Point Zero Forum brings together international decision-makers from technology, politics, and finance in Zurich. Why is this exchange particularly important right now?
Because technological innovation is now the backbone of a stable, future-proof financial system. Technologies like AI, blockchain, and cloud computing are not only changing how we handle, move, and invest money — they are also reshaping how trust is built. That is precisely why dialogue between regulators, technology experts, and financial practitioners is essential. The Point Zero Forum creates a unique environment for this — at eye level, internationally, and solution-oriented. It also strengthens Switzerland’s role as a hub for forward-looking dialogue.
«The Point Zero Forum is a crucial venue for discussing the balance between innovation and stability.»
The Point Zero Forum 2025 focuses on key topics like integrating digital assets and AI into financial markets, as well as fostering technological independence. How do you see Switzerland’s role in these discussions?
The Point Zero Forum is a crucial venue for discussing the balance between innovation and stability. As representatives of the SBA, we advocate for Switzerland to take an active role in shaping global regulatory frameworks and technical standards. We need meaningful frameworks that allow us to leverage opportunities such as AI and digital assets responsibly, while minimizing risks — particularly in areas like cybersecurity and financial stability.
What specific role does a country like Switzerland play in this?
A dual one. First, as a financial center that is innovation-friendly but also stability-oriented. Second, as a platform for dialogue. Switzerland enjoys international credibility because it acts openly, neutrally, and solution-oriented. That’s what makes forums like the Point Zero Forum so valuable — where international regulators, tech pioneers, and financial practitioners come together in a constructive setting. It's not just about exchange; it’s about actively shaping the future. And that strengthens Switzerland’s position within the international financial architecture.
Technological sovereignty is becoming increasingly important in a multipolar world. How can Switzerland maintain its ability to act?
By not just consuming key technologies, but also co-developing them. Cloud infrastructures, data spaces, digital currencies, AI models — those who help set the rules also help shape the future direction of the system. That’s why the geopolitical dimension of digital technologies cannot be underestimated. It’s not about isolation but about maintaining strategic capabilities — and here too, the Forum offers a platform for essential exchange.
«Innovation needs room to grow — but also clear guidelines.»
And how can we strike the right balance between regulation and innovation?
Through smart, forward-looking frameworks. Innovation needs room to grow — but also clear guidelines. Good regulation doesn’t just protect; it builds trust and enables investment. Our role as an association is to mediate between practice and policy. We bring in expertise, consolidate interests, and help formulate practical solutions — both nationally and internationally.
Honestly — when it comes to technological innovation, do you focus more on the opportunities or the risks?
Both. The opportunities are clear: more efficient markets, greater financial inclusion, better services for customers. But we must not ignore the risks — such as cybercrime, algorithmic biases, or systemic instability. New technologies bring new challenges. Without forward-looking governance, there is a risk of misdevelopment — and a subsequent loss of trust. Especially in finance, innovation must be designed responsibly. It’s not a question of either-or, but of balance and foresight.
«AI and blockchain have enormous potential to combat money laundering.»
Speaking of trust: you will also be discussing the use of AI and blockchain in the fight against financial crime at the Forum.
Exactly. This is a crucial topic because trust is the foundation of our financial system — and new technologies can either strengthen or undermine this trust. AI and blockchain have enormous potential to combat money laundering and other financial crimes more effectively. But achieving this requires coordinated regulatory frameworks, internationally supported standards, and close cooperation between financial institutions, technology providers, and supervisory authorities. That’s precisely what we will be discussing at the Roundtable. Our goal is clear: to enable innovation — without compromising the integrity of the system.
Finally: What message should the Point Zero Forum send?
That progress can be shaped — and that Switzerland is ready to take responsibility. Not because we want to change the world, but because we know: global challenges require global answers. And those answers are born through dialogue.
From May 5 to 7, 2025, Zurich will host the Point Zero Forum — bringing together decision-makers from finance, technology, and regulation to co-create the future of global financial markets.
