A high-profile case is capturing attention in the financial sector of Liechtenstein. In February, three members of the Diegelmann family, who have built a significant conglomerate of precious metal firms primarily in Liechtenstein, as well as in Germany and Switzerland, were placed on the notorious Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) list of the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). Since there is no formal appeal process for such sanctions, the Diegelmann family has sued U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, who oversees OFAC, and other U.S. officials. The schedule has been established, and the next steps are as follows: By August 5, the U.S. Treasury and OFAC must provide the plaintiffs, the Diegelmann network, with the complete case file. This will allow the sanctioned gold dealers to understand the specific grounds for their sanctions.

OFAC must submit a list of the file's contents to the court by August 19.

Verdict a Long Way Off

By August 22, the gold dealers must file a motion for summary judgment with the court. The defendants must respond in writing by September 12.

Following this, there will be another round of written exchanges where both parties can address each other's arguments. This phase is expected to conclude by October 3, 2024. A final judgment is anticipated by the end of 2024 or early 2025.
