Interest Business Drives Growth for Switzerland's Oldest Regional Bank

The oldest regional bank in Switzerland is performing successfully. In the crucial interest business, Sparkasse Schwyz achieved a net income increase of 0.2 million Swiss francs in the first half-year, amounting to 12.5 million francs (+2.0 percent). The institution announced this on Tuesday.

Total operating income reached 16.4 million francs, marking a slight increase of 0.8 percent. Interest expenses saw a significant rise, more than doubling by mid-year. Commission and service income surpassed the previous year's results by 6.4 percent, totaling 2.6 million francs. Trading income amounted to 0.8 million francs.

Increase in Customer Funds

Customer loans increased by 2.3 percent to 1.78 billion francs. Customer deposits rose by 1.7 percent to 1.62 billion francs, while customer portfolio values grew by 8.3 percent to 1.70 billion francs. The bank's total assets reached 2.137 billion francs (+2.6 percent).

Operating expenses in the first half-year rose by 3.9 percent to 8.0 million francs. Personnel expenses increased more significantly than administrative expenses. The bank employs approximately 67 staff (FTE adjusted) across its locations in Schwyz, Nidwalden, and Obwalden.

Expansion of Market Area

Heinz Wesner, CEO of Sparkasse Schwyz, anticipates a stable performance for the current year. The bank aims to continue its growth trajectory in asset management and investment business. Additionally, it plans to open a branch in Altendorf by year-end to expand its market presence into the outer canton area, reinforcing its role as a regional bank in the Canton of Schwyz.
