Cocktail of the Month: Rum Sour with a Twist of Coke Zero
There are those moments when you're holding a drink, and it just feels right for the mood of the evening—a drink so well-balanced it brings a smile to your face.
That's exactly how I felt when I discovered the Rum Sour Twist. It was a warm late-summer evening—the kind where the sun lingers in the sky, the air feels gentle, and time seems to slow down, moving with a leisurely grace.
Rum season has arrived
In moments like these, two things are essential: good company and a refreshing cocktail to complete the experience. The days are getting darker faster, and it’s the perfect time for a drink with dark spirits – the time for rum has arrived!
I'm a big fan of classic drinks, but sometimes the moment calls for something new, something exciting – and that's exactly what this Rum Sour Twist offers. It brings together the best of both worlds: the fresh, fruity acidity of a classic sour cocktail and the effervescent sweetness of Coca-Cola.
But instead of the usual Coca-Cola, I opted for Coca-Cola Zero Sugar. Why? Simple: I love the light, sugar-free version that not only adds a unique touch to the drink but also ensures it doesn't become too heavy – perfect for long evenings where you're likely to indulge in one more glass.
A story of rum and cola
When you think of rum, images of tropical islands, azure seas, and the laid-back Caribbean lifestyle immediately come to mind.
It's no wonder rum has found its home in countless cocktails. From the classic Daiquiri to the beloved Cuba Libre, rum is one of the most versatile spirits in the cocktail world.
And the combination with Coca-Cola? A timeless classic.
But while a Cuba Libre usually comes with lime and sugar, I wanted to try something new. I wanted to use the zesty, slightly bitter note of Coca-Cola Zero Sugar to transform a classic Rum Sour into a modern fall cocktail.
Sparkling excitement, wonderfully balanced
The sweetness of the simple syrup and the freshness of the lemon juice are enhanced by the cola, adding just the right touch of sparkling excitement – not too sweet, but wonderfully balanced.
The Rum Sour Twist is perfect for any occasion: whether it's a relaxed evening at home, a barbecue with friends, or a more sophisticated gathering.
Thanks to the light, refreshing touch of the Coca-Cola, the cocktail remains pleasantly light, making it something you can fully savor. The best part? It's quick to prepare and impressive enough to wow your guests.
The recipe – perfection in a glass
Enough talk – it's time to try this refreshing twist for yourself. Here's the recipe to give you a little taste of late-summer magic:
Ingredients for the Rum Sour Twist:
… 60ml aged rum (I recommend a spicy Jamaican rum, like Appleton 8 years)
… 25ml fresh lemon juice (freshly squeezed, of course)
… 15ml simple syrup (adjust to taste, ideally a 1:1 ratio)
… A dash of Coca-Cola Zero Sugar (about 10–20ml, as desired)
… A dried lemon slice for garnish
… We use Lehmann’s new Barcelona Cocktail Glass from Reims for serving
Preparation:
- Shake it up: Add rum, lemon juice, and simple syrup to a shaker filled with plenty of ice. Shake vigorously until the drink is nicely chilled.
- Strain and serve: Strain the mixture into a stylish cocktail glass.
- The sparkling twist: Now comes the secret ingredient – add a dash of ice-cold Coca-Cola Zero Sugar. This brings a lively, fizzy note that perfectly rounds out the classic sour.
- Garnish and enjoy: Garnish the drink with a dried lemon slice and enjoy it to the fullest.
And there you have it: the Rum Sour Twist!
I hope you have fun recreating it and, above all, enjoy a beautiful autumn in Switzerland.
#cheers
Conclusion
The Rum Sour Twist is more than just a cocktail – it's an experience. Blending the classic flavors of a traditional sour with the contemporary twist of Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, this refreshing, light cocktail is the perfect companion for those last warm evenings of the year. A drink that proves tradition and innovation can go hand in hand. Try it, sit back, and let autumn work its magic on you.
