The Man Putting Bürgenstock in the Spotlight
The Bürgenstock Resort Lake Lucerne continues its success story: At the Falstaff Hotel Awards - one of the most prestigious accolades in the German-speaking hospitality industry - Chris K. Franzen, Managing Director has been named «Hotelier of the Year». The jury honored him for his leadership, international expertise, and his role in positioning the resort as a premier European destination.
«This award means a great deal to me,» said Franzen. «I’ve had the privilege of working in exceptional locations around the world — but Bürgenstock is unique in many ways. Above all, it’s the people who shape this place and give it its distinctive energy.»
Third Generation, Global Career
As a native of Zermatt, Franzen comes from a family of hoteliers and represents the third generation in the profession. After training as a chef and completing studies in Australia and at Cornell University, he spent more than two decades with Hyatt, holding positions in the Middle East and India.
He gained particular recognition as General Manager of the Waldorf Astoria Doha Lusail, which opened just ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Following the tournament, he served as CEO of advisory firm Aureus Advisors before taking over the leadership of the Bürgenstock Resort in April 2024.
Peace Conference as an Early Test
Shortly after assuming his role, Franzen faced an extraordinary challenge: In June 2024, the Bürgenstock Resort hosted the international conference on peace in Ukraine - a major logistical undertaking that attracted global attention.
Since then, he has pursued a clear strategic positioning: international in outlook, yet firmly rooted in Swiss values. The resort is part of the Bürgenstock Collection, which is owned by Qatar's Katara Hospitality and includes three additional properties: the Hotel Schweizerhof in Bern, the Hotel Royal Savoy in Lausanne, and the Adria Hotel in London.
