The new CEO of Barclays Switzerland is a Former HSBC Executive

Barclays Switzerland is undergoing a change at the top level of its leadership. The new CEO is John Shipman, while the current CEO Rahim Daya will take on the role of Global Head of Sales Management for Barclays Private Bank and Wealth Management.

Shipman, who brings a quarter century of financial market experience, most recently served as Interim CEO of the Swiss private banking business as well as Country Head Switzerland at HSBC. Over a total of 16 years at the bank, he held various senior positions, notably as Chief Risk Officer. Earlier in his career, he worked at UBS Investment Bank and at Ernst & Young in London.

Seeking – and finding – a new challenge

Last October it became known that Shipman would leave HSBC «to pursue new challenges outside the bank».

The new CEO will be based in Geneva and will report directly to Annabelle Bryde, Head of Barclays Private Bank International. Commenting on the appointment, she said: «Under his leadership, we aim to further strengthen our Swiss business and expand our position as a strategic platform for international wealth flows.»

Referring to the new role of the outgoing CEO, she added: «His new role underlines our strong culture of career development and internal mobility. It ensures that our leaders continue to grow within the organisation and take on new challenges with fresh perspectives.»

Barclays has been present in Switzerland since 1986. Since 2012, clients — including families, entrepreneurs, institutional investors and companies — have been served not only from Geneva but also from Zurich.
