«Switzerland Has Made Another Leap Forward in Digitalization»
It's the most important event of the Swiss IT scene: on Thursday, the gala night of the Digital Economy Award will take place in Zurich's Hallenstadion.
Christian Hunziker, Managing Director of the industry association swissICT and head of the award jury, speaks about the quality of the submitted projects, the state of digitalization in Switzerland, and how the country compares internationally.
Christian Hunziker, how do you assess the 2025 edition?
Very positively. That's also the clear verdict of the jury. The quality of submissions is high, and the overall level of digital expertise continues to rise. The jury sessions were exciting, and the decisions were not always easy.
«It’s no longer about whether AI will replace humans, but how it can be integrated into everyday work.»
The award aims to promote digitalization in Switzerland. Is the development going in the right direction?
Definitely. We're seeing continuous progress, and we can confidently say: Switzerland is in a strong position digitally - especially in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). Many companies have taken a clear step forward.
What particularly impressed you about this year’s projects?
AI has been a central theme at the award since 2021. But the focus is shifting. It’s no longer about whether AI will replace humans, but how it can be meaningfully integrated into everyday workflows. Particularly in healthcare, we’re seeing how intelligently applied AI can create real added value — in fact, two finalists this year are directly focused on that topic.
«I’m cautious with superlatives — but it’s clear: Switzerland has nothing to hide.»
Can the Digital Economy Award be seen as a barometer of digitalization?
Absolutely. I used to call it a radar, but seismograph probably fits better — because the award detects trends even in their early stages. By looking at the finalists, we can see exactly where Switzerland stands in digital development — and what we’re seeing makes me very optimistic.
How does Switzerland compare internationally?
I’m cautious with superlatives – but it’s clear: Switzerland has nothing to hide. Despite its size, it can compete with countries like the U.S. or China. Our education system is a key factor that gives us a strong advantage.
Was erwartet die Gäste an der Galanacht im Hallenstadion?
Many leading figures of Switzerland's digital economy will be there - including numerous CEOs of major companies and political decision-makers. In terms of networking, the event is likely unmatched. We're especially pleased that Federal Councillor Albert Rösti and Federal Chancellor Viktor Rossi will attend. And of course, there will be live pitches, entertainment, and exclusive insights into the finalists' projects.
