Two Convictions in One of Switzerland's Largest Financial Scandals
The 1MDB case is considered one of the biggest financial scandals in Switzerland. At the center of the controversy are two managers from a Swiss company. They orchestrated a joint venture with the Malaysian state fund 1MDB aboard a yacht off the coast of Cannes. Both parties planned to bring capital and expertise to the table: 1MDB would contribute around $1 billion, while the two managers would provide oil fields in Turkmenistan through their company. However, according to the indictment by the Federal Prosecutor's Office, the company did not actually own the oil fields.
The two managers are alleged to have invested part of the 1MDB funds in oil production, but kept most of the profits for themselves. The Federal Prosecutor's Office also accused them of diverting several hundred million dollars into their own accounts.
Over $240 Million Seized
On Wednesday, the Federal Criminal Court in Bellinzona convicted the Swiss-British businessman and his Saudi-Swiss partner of fraud, money laundering, and serious misappropriation of funds, sentencing them to seven and six years in prison respectively.
The court also ordered that their assets, including real estate in Switzerland and the United Kingdom, as well as amounts in numerous bank accounts—totaling over $240 million—be seized and returned to 1MDB.
Another Step Towards Restitution
«We welcome the verdinct», a spokesperson for the Malaysian state fund said, noting close cooperation with Swiss law enforcement authorities. «We thank the Swiss authorities for their thorough investigation, which led to this conviction», the sokesperson added.
The state fund also stated that it will continue to pursue enforcement actions against parties involved in the fraudulent embezzlement of Malaysian state funds globally. «Today's verdict is another step towards restitution», the spokesperson emphasized.
