Zurich Steps Into the Indian Insurance Market

Zurich has acquired a 70 percent stake in Indian insurer Kotak Mahindra General Insurance. With the completion of the transaction following necessary regulatory approvals, the Swiss conglomerate becomes the first foreign insurer to expand in India after the relaxation of state-imposed ownership limits.

The seller of the stake is Kotak Mahindra Bank. The purchase price amounts to 556 billion Indian Rupees, approximately $670 million USD, as announced by the company on Wednesday. The acquisition was funded through a combination of growth capital and stock purchases.

Increase in Government Ownership Limit

Zurich had previously announced its intention in November to acquire a 51 percent stake in the Indian insurer. This was subsequently increased to the now-acquired 70 percent stake in February.

The purchase marks the largest foreign investment in India's general insurance market. In 2021, the country raised the cap on foreign ownership in Indian companies from 49 to 74 percent.

Middle-Class and Corporate Demand Boost

Zurich has high expectations for India's general insurance market, citing strong growth opportunities and continuous development in digital and financial infrastructure. There is increasing demand for insurance services among the growing middle class, as well as commercial insurance solutions driven by robust growth in India's SME and corporate sectors.

«The acquisition of Kotak General Insurance sets the way forward for Zurich to be a leading player in a very significant growth market – India. This is a key strategic step for Zurich,» said Tulsi Naidu, CEO of Zurich Asia Pacific. «India’s insurance market offers immense potential, and together with Kotak, we are committed to supporting its growth and development.»
