Swiss Finance's Biggest Exits of 2019
10. René Bruelhart – Job Stymied

A raid of the Vatican's financial intelligence unit, the AIF, augured the end of Swiss bankerRené Bruelhart's (pictured above) tenure as the pope's cleaner-upper. When the Egmont Group, an informal organization of financial crime-fighters, excluded the AIF, Bruelhart stepped down.
The exit of Bruelhart, a widely-respected Swiss enforcement veteran who is in the process of moving into the private sector, revealed differently two starkly different interpretations: Pope Francis' office said Bruelhart's remit hadn't been renewed, while Bruelhart himself said he resigned.
The bottom line is that the Vatican's finance, even after its bank shut nearly 5,000 accounts under Bruelhart's direction and the number of potentially suspicious transactions surged, remains subject to internal politics.
«There is no point in staying on the board of an ineffective organization,» AIF colleague Marc Odendall told the «Wall Street Journal» (Odendall also left the body). Bruelhart remains a board member at Swiss regional lender Hypothekarbank Lenzburg.
